Electric Jaguar
In July of 2020, my dear friend Stephen Evans came to me and said, "Let's convert my Jaguar convertible to electric." Foolishly, I said, "sure!" It turns out that Stephen's E-type was the least desirable version: a 1974 with giant safety bumpers, open headlights, and an anemic leaky V-12. Additionally, the car was in rough shape mechanically. And so began a long journey to rebuild and upgrade everything, remove the hideous bumpers, and backdate the lights to the svelte covered versions of the early 1960s. We then set out to imagine an electric conversion by creating a digital version of the front subframe, and designing a tremendous number of new components. We had to invent and fabricate an electric brake booster, power steering rack, and heater system. Packaging the batteries and high voltage components was an exercise in Tetris but we ended up with a vehicle that has 200 miles of range, and weighs slightly less than the original gas version. It drives beautifully and is much more composed than the original. The most satisfying aspect is that Stephen's Jag may be the only example of its ilk that does not leak oil or suffer from maddening Lucas electric gremlins.
